“I think we might be at a point in time where, because of all these different types of legislation, might have to strategically think about how they operate in this space,” Ari Lightman, professor of digital media and marketing at Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College, told Yahoo Finance. That kind of pressure could force Apple to change its business practices surrounding the app store and how it profits from it. In the U.S., the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced the Open App Markets Act, which would prevent app store operators with more than 50 million users, essentially Apple and Google, from forcing app developers to use their proprietary payment systems. Ditto the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority. India’s Competition Commission, meanwhile, has launched an antitrust investigation into Apple’s App Store practices.
